📋 Overview

SafeScan ("the app") is an independent barcode scanning tool that checks products against the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) public recall database. This privacy policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, and your rights.

SafeScan is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration or any government agency.

📦 Data We Collect

SafeScan collects no personal information. Specifically:

• We do not collect your name, email, or account details
• We do not collect your location
• We do not collect device identifiers
• We do not use analytics or crash reporting services
• We do not use advertising networks or trackers

📱 Data Stored on Your Device

SafeScan stores your scan history (barcodes and recall results) locally on your device only, using your device's internal storage. This data:

• Never leaves your device
• Is never uploaded to any server
• Can be deleted at any time from within the app (My Scans → Clear History)
• Is permanently deleted when you uninstall the app

🌐 External Services

When you scan a product, the app makes the following network requests:

• FDA Open API (api.fda.gov) — to check the product barcode against the public FDA enforcement (recall) database. Only the barcode number is sent. No personal information is transmitted.
• Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org) — to look up product names and images from barcodes. Only the barcode number is sent.

These are both public, open-data services. Please review their respective privacy policies for how they handle API requests.

📷 Camera & Storage Permissions

SafeScan requests the following device permissions:

• Camera — used only to scan barcodes in real time. Camera feed is processed entirely on-device and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted.
• Photos / Media — used only when you choose to upload a photo from your gallery to scan a barcode. The image is processed on-device and never uploaded.

👶 Children's Privacy

SafeScan does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. The app does not collect personal data from any user, regardless of age.

SafeScan is for informational purposes only. Recall data is sourced from the FDA public database and may not reflect all recalls or real-time updates. A "no recall" result does not guarantee a product is safe. Always verify results at fda.gov before making any health or safety decisions.

✏️ Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last Updated" date below. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
